TIMBER GRADING COURSE KICKS OFF HEARTWOOD’S 2014 SEASON
The first Timber Grading Training Course sponsored by the Timber Frame Engineering Council (TFEC) was held from April 7th to 9th at Heartwood. This was a collaborative event: 19 architects, engineers and timber framers earned 18 hours of Continuing Education Credits provided through the Timber Frame Business Council (TFBC). Wood scientist Ron Anthony joined instructors from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association.
They spoke primarily of the development of standards and rules for timber, the factors that influence wood behavior and considerations for grading timber in existing buildings (“in-situ”), testing and engineering evaluation of reclaimed timbers, the strength reducing characteristics in timber and then led hands-on application of the grading rules to timbers in the Heartwood yard.
This professional-level course was the first of it’s kind and we hope to host it again in the future.
